City authorizes moving hydrants

Jeff Hajny

On July 3 in the Municipal Building, the mayor and Seward City Council authorized the Water/Wastewater Department to move four fire hydrants and replace a fifth.
A presentation was made by Pat Varbka of the Seward Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant about replacing 333 feet of old, cracked cement from the laterals to the curb on Eastridge Avenue coming from Hillcrest Drive.
Varbka also proposed to open a manhole on Roberts Street, and another by Hughes Brothers, both of which are filled with concrete, and to move fire hydrants by the fire department, First and Lincoln, Ninth and Lincoln and Seventh and Jackson so they could be at a more convenient location, and to replace the hydrant by Hughes Brothers.
The estimated total cost for this whole project was $68,135.18.
In another matter, on June 17, bonds were issued to pave Karol Kay Boulevard and Fourth Street. The ordinance for the bonds did not include paving the intersections on these streets. The council adopted an ordinance to take care of this problem.
     In other business, the board:
•confirmed the appointment of Mike Klintworth to the Police Pension Committee.
