CHS approves fine arts bond

Jeff Hajny

    It is the beginning of summer. Classes are all over, and teachers and students alike are enjoying vacation. Even though this is their vacation time, members of the school board still have to come together for monthly board meetings.
     On June 12, the Centennial Public School Board of Education held its regular meeting. The board approved a $4.7 million obligation bond to be used as a general investment for the school to be used for the fine arts addition.
     The board moved on to approve the new student handbooks, which include a new policy on keeping cell phones turned off in class.
     The board also decided to continue the district's enrollment limits for class sizes, which are 25 if they have one section, 50 if there are two sections, and 70 if three sections with K-8 and 70 for grades 9-12 if three sections are allowed.
     Along with this, the board approved a bid of $5,184 from Kevin Sullivan to place new handicapped parking stalls near the entrance to the football field, along with a bid of $1,396 to replace 54 feet of cracked sidewalk.
     Following their approval of these items, the board approved a request from Ashley Giesmann to be eligible for horizontal movement following completion of three graduate level classes.
     The board approved a new hiring of Benjamin Rickert as an instructor of vocal music and accepted the resignation of custodian Robert Endorf.
     Summer is also a time when school boards begin to consider the budget for the upcoming school year.
     In other business, the board:
     • heard a report from principal Mark Murphy on the gifted programs;
     • approved application for Title I funds in fiscal year 2007-2008;
     • approved compensation of $12.45 an hour for coaches supervising the weight room with a cap of 210 total hours; and
     • met in an executive session to discuss the negotiations proposal and salary/fringe benefit packages and miscellaneous rates.
