James W. Paye


    James William Paye, 94, Utica, died June 4, 2007, in Utica.
     He was born Sept. 17, 1912, to Clyde and Vida (Rose) Paye in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from East High School, Des Moines. He graduated from Iowa State College, Ames, in the division of industrial science chemical technology in 1933.
     He worked for 40 years in the ink department at Meredith Publishing and Printing Company, where he served as chemist, then manager and finally as a researcher. He also worked full time for contractor L.J. Rothfus for nine years.
     He was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, Castle Dance Club, Camera Club, Esquire Toastmasters' Club, the Des Moines Club of Printing House Craftsmen and a neighborhood bridge club.
     He was preceded in death by his wife, Amy (Bishop) Paye; sisters and brothers-in-law, Edna and Bob McManus, Lillian and Fred Bowers and Dale Gideon; brother and sister-in-law, Herschel and Libby Paye; and son-in-law, Bill Schrader.
     Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Connie Schrader, Denver, Colo., Joanie and Denny Cradick, Utica, and Kathryn Cover, Parker, Colo.; sister, Frances Gideon, Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren; and great-granddaughter.
     Funeral services were June 7 at the United Methodist Church, Utica, with the Rev. Michael Laing officiating. Honorary casketbearers were Bill and Jeff Miller, Jennifer Ogarek, David Cover, Chris, Ryan and Summer Cradick and Marissa Pummill.
     Graveside service and inurnment will be held at a later date.
