Seward seniors split week's action

Stephanie Croston

The Seward American Legion senior baseball team improved its record to 6-7 after going 2-2 in the past week.
The team split a doubleheader at Fremont June 10, winning game one 8-2 and losing game two 8-0.
Justin Grieser got the win in game one, pitching a complete game and striking out 11.
"We had one big inning in the sixth," Coach Roy Wright said. "We capitalized on errors and just kept running."
On defense, John Samuelson threw out two runners attempting to steal, and Grieser picked a runner off second base, Wright said.
At the plate, Grieser was three for four with a double, and Caleb Krenk was also three for four. Justin Ferguson tripled, Trevor Oliver doubled and Alex Lowther and Tanner Smith also had hits for Seward.
"That was a big win for us," Wright said.
In game two, Fremont sent a left-handed pitcher to the mound who threw slow, slower and even slower, according to Wright.
"We couldn't get our hands back," he said.
Lowther got the start for Seward and pitched three-and-a-third innings. Kevin Pulec pitched the rest of the game in relief.
    David City 14, Seward 7
Seward headed to David City June 6 and lost 14-7.
"It was the worst game of the year for us," Wright said.
Pulec pitched a complete game despite the gale-force winds blowing that day.
"The wind was blowing out. The left fielders were 10 feet from the fence, our centerfielder was in left-center, and our right fielder was in center," Wright said.
David City scored seven runs in the second inning, thanks to an extra four outs, the coach said.
"It's tough to beat anyone like that," he said.
Kyle Einspahr, filling in for players on vacation, was two for four at the plate. Pulec added a double.
    Seward 11, York 10
Seward started the week with a come-from-behind win over York June 5.
"We started off not playing well," Wright said, adding that his team allowed eight runs in two innings.
Lowther came on in relief and shut down the York offense.
"We were down 9-1 and came back to win," Wright said. "It felt good to battle back."
At the plate, Lowther and Joel Ferguson were two for three, and Samuelson was three for four with two doubles.
