SCC bomb threat defused
by Nancy McGill, The Milford Times
Southeast Community College students and faculty had a lengthy morning break Aug. 17. A note found by a student in a men's restroom said a bomb was in the college's library. The threat was later declared false by Milford Police Chief Forrest Siebken. Nine hundred to 1,000 students and faculty members were evacuated for a little over two hours as Milford Police and the college's safety team investigated the threat. The Milford Volunteer Fire Department and Nebraska State Patrol were also at the scene. About an hour after the initial call came in shortly after 9 a.m., police and staff conducted a sweep of the main building where the bomb was supposedly planted. They were looking for an explosive device, anything that seemed to be out of place or of a suspicious nature. The Nebraska State Patrol bomb squad was contacted, but Siebken said the sweep was procedure. SCC President Dr. Robert Huck, spokesman for the college, said he felt very good about how the situation was handled by college faculty Paula Young and Robin Moore. Young is the Milford campus's assistant director and Moore is the dean of student services. "Paula and Robin did a great job of putting action plans into place," Huck said. Siebken said fingerprints were taken from the restroom. The matter remained under investigation as of Aug. 21.
