Centennial boys pick up two wins

by Theodore Wiesehan

The Centennial boys' basketball team pulled off two wins last week, though their conference record will improve by just one to 8-5.
The Broncos travelled to Henderson Jan. 20 to best the Huskies 55-48, then returned home to defeat the Columbus Scotus Shamrocks 40-28 the following evening in a Hurricane Katrina benefit exhibition game.
The Broncos shut down the Huskies' outside game early, allowing only two three-pointers during the entire game from a Heartland team feared for its long-range accuracy.
"Coming in, we knew that we had to be concerned with their ability to shoot the ball," Centennial Coach Dave Hiebner said. "I thought as a team we played as well defensively on the perimeter as we've played this year."
Sam Blake led Bronco scoring with 16 points. Brett Maher and Brad Luce contributed 14 and eight, respectively.
The following evening saw the Centennial boys back on their home court trouncing Columbus Scotus 40-28 in a Hurricane Katrina benefit exhibition game.
"It was pretty tough to play a game that doesn't have any real standing this late in the season," Hiebner said. "[It was] basically a practice."
The competitive mood was further interrupted by a fire alarm which stopped the game for several minutes midway through the second quarter.
Blake again led Centennial with 12 points, while Chris Foreman and Maher contributed 11 and six, respectively.
    Upcoming action
The Broncos will play host to Thayer Central, Friday, Jan. 27, before departing for first round of the Southern Nebraska Conference Tournament at Fillmore Central, Saturday, Jan. 28, through Saturday, Feb. 4.
