Genevieve R. Hanus
Genevieve R. Hanus, 92, Lincoln, died April 25, 2008. Mrs. Hanus was born July 24, 1915, in David City, to John and August (Benda) Birkel. She graduated from David City High School and later from Beauty School in Lincoln. On Nov. 18, 1947, she married John J. Hanus at St. Mary's Church in David City. Mrs. Hanus was a member of St. Mary's Church, PCCW and Catholic Daughters along with singing in the St. Mary's Choir and enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, playing cards, needlepoint, embroidering and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by husband John; children Jeanne and Gerald Hanus; brothers Herman and John Hanus and sisters Caroline Birkel, Angeline Sutter and Josephine Albers. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law John and Penne Hanus, Lincoln; daughters and sons-in-law Kay and Mel Cihal, Dwight, Connie and Don Johnson, Lincoln, and Karen and Paul Steffensmeier, Fremont, Wis.; sister Bertha Hilger, Kingsley, Iowa; sisters-in-law Ludy Birkel, David City, Sr. Marietta Hanus, Milwaukee, Wis., Clara Meysenburg, David City, and Rita Meysenburg, Omaha; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Services were May 2 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in David City. Burial was at Sts. Peter and Mary Cemetery in rural Bellwood. Memorials may be sent in care of the family.
Anna Novak
Anna Novak, 87, died April 22, 2008, at Sunrise Country Manor in Milford. Mrs. Novak was born in Weston to Anton and Francis Novak and lived in Bee for several years. She was preceded in death by sister Lillian Bureh and brother Anton Novak Jr. Survivors include brother Martin Novak, David City; and nieces and nephews. Services were held May 3 at the Touhy Cemetery with the Rev. Thomas Kuffel officiating.
Milton Bruce Stoll
Milton Bruce Stoll, 95, died May 2, 2008, in Utica. Mr. Stoll was born May 27, 1912, in Utica to Gustav and Minnie (Behm) Stoll. He graduated from Giltner High School and married Laura Wiemer on Aug. 17, 1947, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Utica. They farmed near Gresham until his retirement. Mr. Stoll was preceded in death by wife Laura; brothers Donald and Oren Stoll and sisters Mildred Rafert and Willette McConnell. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Ray and Mary Stoll, Utica, and Robert and Melinda Stoll, Gresham; daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Dave Sedlacek, Columbus, Nancy and Ron Sager, Nickerson, and Lavon Stoll, Beatrice; sisters-in-law Rosemary Stoll and Darlene Wiemer, both of Lincoln; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services were May 6 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Gresham with the Rev. Lee Seetin officiating. Casketbearers were Jeremy and Craig Stoll, Mark Sager, Russ Andel, Tye Fisher, Andrew Sedlacek, Ryan Beringer and Andy Drueke. Interment was at Utica Cemetery. Memorials may be sent in care of family choice.
Elizabeth Anna Jane Harms
Elizabeth Anna Jane Harms, 87, died May 1, 2008, in Seward. Mrs. Harms was born Dec. 3, 1920, in Plattsmouth to Earl and Ola "Dolly" (Gregory) Terryberry. She married Dale Harms on Dec. 31, 1941, in Rockport, Mo., and they lived in Plattsmouth where Dale worked as a painter. Following Dale's death, she moved to Seward. Mrs. Harms was preceded in death by husband Dale; brothers Fred, Jimmy, Bobby and Billy Terryberry and sister Shirley Benner. Survivors include daughter Sharon Kolhof, Seward; sister-in-law Geraldine Terryberry, Omaha; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services were May 5 at First Presbyterian Church in Plattsmouth with the Rev. Ronald Van Heukelom officiating. Casketbearers were Jerry Larsen, Jeff and Jaden Volzke, Lawrence Smith, Jack Fullerton and Bill Smock. Honorary casketbearers were Darreld Harms, George Fine, Leroy McCulloch and Herman Scholl. Interment was at Glendale Cemetery in Louisville. Memorials may be sent in care of family choice.
Gladyce J. Kurtz
Gladyce J. Kurtz, 94, died April 30, 2008, in Seward. Mrs. Kurtz was born Oct. 26, 1913, in Lincoln, to Earl and Elizabeth (Knott) Jameson. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1932 and married Glenn R. Kurtz on Dec. 31, 1939, at the Blackstone Hotel in Omaha. She worked at Family Drug in Lincoln in cosmetic and jewelry sales. She retired after 30 years there and moved to Seward in 2001. Mrs. Kurtz was preceded in death by husband Glenn. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Nancy and Jim Eitel, Seward, and Patricia and Peter Patrone, Longmont, Colo.; son John J. Kurtz, Houston, Texas; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and cousins. Services were May 5 at Zabka Funeral Home in Seward with the Rev. Lee Johnson officiating. Pallbearers were Jim Eitel, Kelly and Reily Sullivan, Peter Patrone, Russ Stanczyk and Darryl McArthur. Honorary Pallbearers were Peter Jon Patrone and 2nd Lieutenant Will Thomas Patrone. Graveside service and burial were May 5 at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln. Memorials may be sent to Anna Sundermann Homes-East.
Helen Van Andel
Helen Van Andel, 82, died May 3, 2008, at Sunrise Country Manor in Milford. Mrs. Van Andel was born Aug. 23, 1925, on a farm near McCool Junction, to Lloyd and Alberta "Gladys" (Jacobsen) Broman. She graduated from Fairmont High School in 1943 and married Glen H. Van Andel on Dec. 9, 1945, in Fairmont. They made their home near Pleasant Dale where they worked on a farm. She spent many years working for the grocery store in Pleasant Dale and ran a daycare center following her retirement. Mrs. Van Andel enjoyed working in her flower gardens in her spare time. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodis Women in Pleasant Dale, the Order of the Eastern Star Blue River Chapter 132 in Milford and was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Van Andel was preceded in death by husband Glen and an infant brother. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Marie and Gary Brhel, Pleasant Dale, and Jan and Ron Bell, Milford; sons and daughters-in-law Rex and Marcia Van Andel, Milford, and Ron and Mary Van Andel, Pleasant Dale; brother and sister-in-law Ralph and Lora Broman; sister and brother-in-law Virginia and Lambert Hopken, Geneva; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Services were May 6 at the Pleasant Dale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rod Lyon officiating. Pall bearers were Aaron, Ryan and Doug Van Andel, Brian Skruch, Chad Brehmer, Chad Drake, Jaimi Strong, Jason Roth and Kendall Nitzschke. Interment was at the Pleasant Dale Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Pleasant Dale United Methodist Church or to the Pleasant Dale Volunteer Fire Department.
Thomas W. Engler
Thomas W. Engler, 64, died April 28, 2008, in Seward. Mr. Engler was born Feb. 29, 1944, in Seward to Willard and Helena Jane (Zillig) Engler. He graduated from Seward High School in 1962 and married Marilyn Mower on May 20, 1967. He worked at Brandeis in Omaha for a short time and was the owner of Engler Clothing in Seward for 18 years. He worked at Hughes Brothers, Inc. and began working at Seward Motor Freight, Inc. in 1992, later and was later named executive vice president. He was on the board of directors of Midwest Federal Savings and Loan, a member of the Menswear Retailers of America, and senior warden at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Seward, a member of the board of directors of the Seward Federal Savings and Loan Association, a task force member of the Southeast Nebraska Health Planning Council, chairman of the Community Fund Drive for Concordia University, president of the Seward Area Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Seward Country Club, serving on the board, Oliver Lodge 38 A.F. and A.M. in Seward, the Seward Area Chamber of Commerce, the Seward Industrial Development Corporation, the Seward community Development Corporation, the Seward Volunteer Fire Dept., Seward Cemetery Board, tthe Seward High School Distributive Education Council Board of Directors, and a board member and past chair person of the Foundation for Memorial Health Care Systems. Mr. Engler was preceded in death by parents Willard J. and Jane (Zillig) Engler and parents-in-law John R. and Dee Mower. Survivors include wife Marilyn Engler, Seward; sons and daughters-in-law David and Jennifer Engler, Lincoln, and Rob and Teresa Engler, Burlington, Iowa; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Carol and Ray Kiser, Lincoln, and GiGi Mower, Valparaiso; seven grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins. Celebration of life services were May 6 at United Methodist Church in Seward with Mother Helen Goltl officiating. Memorials may be sent to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church Building Fund in Seward.
